THE PROFANITY HOUSE (The Rutherurd-Stuyvesants Estate), Allamuchy, NJ

by Chris Chaos

(WARNING: Strong language)

The area is called Tranquility along the County Road 517 and consists of rolling farmland and rural countryside. You would never know that this fantastic rustic abandoned location existed unless you knew where you were going. Even an overhead search of Google Maps hides this beauty all too well. The road to this location strolls past a bar and looks like a dirt road leading to nowhere, but if you decide to follow it you will see it runs past 2 occupied houses and alongside a heavily tread mountain. You will come to a once impressive ten foot concrete pillar with heavily rusted iron gates. This was the grand entrance to the Rutherurd-Stuyvesants Estate. This road, which was once the driveway to one of the most impressive estates in New Jersey and arguable the whole United States, is called Stuyvesant Road. The Stuyvesant's are one of the oldest and wealthiest families in the United States. The Rutherurd-Stuyvesants were direct descendants of Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672), who was the last Dutch colonial Director-General of New Netherland, the Dutch territory between the Delaware Bay and the Connecticut River (including what is now New Jersey) until it was ceded provisionally to the English in 1664.

If you decide to continue past the gates you will see a wooded carriage path and the remains of structures that were built in the late 1700's, featuring walls, bridges and dams. If you venture even further you will come to one of the oddest of locations that we have visited. There are 6 buildings still standing but are in very severe disrepair, these include farmhouses, barns, mills and what not, on our 2nd trip here there was a little boat added to the mix. Now onto the most strangest of the strange..on EVERY square inch of this property, every board, door, window, cabinet, there is vulgar profanities Spray painted onto it. To the average person this may be disturbing, but to us, we can find the extreme beauty in decay. There also is a train station a few miles away that suffered the same treatment as this location but we have not visited there yet. No one has claimed this work but the majority of it appears to have come from the same person since the paint and the writing is very similar. Obviously other visitors have added their print to this masterpiece. Some of the slanders are directed at someone named Mark and his mother, I can only imagine the anger seething in the person that wrote all of this towards another human being. The dedication is top notch based on how the artist painted so much in all these buildings.

Visit #2:
This group of buildings was probably my favorite location of all the places that we visited. It is a collection of 7 houses in various stages of decay due to neglect and vandalism. But it seems that someone took their graffiti skills to a whole new level at this location. Each of the 7 houses has been decorated from top to bottom with no portion of the houses missed with deviant phrases spray painted in a non -delicate way.

The way in was very interesting, from the road you can see a bar way back in the tree line but you have to venture down a dirt road to get to it. Upon passing the bar there is an even smaller dirt road that you have to traverse for several hundred yards until you come to an old imposing iron gate, from here you have to go on foot. Depending on the time of the year the forest here can be very thick and hard to walk through. Luckily when we went it was only medium thickness.

We walked to the 1st house and were impressed by its size. Sexual innuendos and graphic sex acts were spray painted all over the house greeting us with a taste of irony. The house was in moderate disrepair and the fear of falling through the floor laughed at us with each step. The person that did this "urban artwork" must have a lot of bottled anger due to targeting specific people in his work and the depth of depravity some of the sentences reach. It much have taken weeks to add their artistic touch to all 7 of these houses. If GG Allin were still alive I would say that he was involved. We plan to go back due to the fact that we missed 2 houses because there was no path to these structures and the sticker bushes and growth was just way too much to trek through. In one of the buildings we found an unidentified half skull which I added to our private collection.

My personal favorite poem from these walls is: "Eminem gets fucked up the ass by Billy Goats"

Exiting one of the houses we came across a haunting image of a moss covered shoe hanging from a tree. Obviously someone put it there long ago, but the image stays with me to this day.

The Rutherfurd-Stuyvesant Estate History:

The state purchased the land in the late 1960's to build interstate 80 which split the estate and the 2 farms (Tranquility and Allamuchy) in two. On the Allamuchy Parks and Recreation web site it states, “The mansion burned to the ground in 1959 and was bulldozed under and the remaining farm buildings are completely covered with trees, brush, etc. and the area is definitely not safe or pleasant to roam around.”

Now the Tranquillity Farms is in operation across the road from the estate. If you check out the local cemetery just up the road you can also find many buried that share the Rutherford-Stuyvesant names.

The Witches Well: Jersey Devil Mount Holly NJ

by Chris Chaos

Does the Witches Well hold the Jersey Devil? There was a legend that the Jersey Devil is sealed inside a stone altar on top of a mountain. This mountain is known as THE MOUNT in Mount Holly New Jersey.
Legend has it that the Jersey Devil was chained up here and if you put your ear up to the metal door you can hear him thrashing around. Another legend was that this site was the capstone that went all the way to Hell.

Yet another legend goes that one of the 1st (suspected) witches in the area was thrown down this well and she survived the drop and clawed and screamed for help and cursed all those that threw her into the well. Later on the shed was built over the Well to stop the haunting that was occurring. Recently the township put up a barbwire fence with stop motion cameras that actually yell at you when triggered. "Stop! You have been caught on camera and this will be used in your prosecution, turn around now!" it states when you venture too close. Why would they spend all this money for this security? What is really here? Without breaking the law and jumping the fence you currently cannot reach The Witches Well, but you can see it through the fence that was erected. If you go in the warm months be aware of the mosquitoes, they are plentiful and very hungry.

There is also a gravestone located in the cemetery right near this area and a woman is buried there. The grave reads: "Thus is the fate of all who turn from God, you are here because God hates you." This lady, who was a suspected witch, supposedly summoned the Jersey Devil and he killed her. Afterwards JD was caught and chained up and cast into the Well.

INDIAN CABIN ROAD: Mullica Township, New Jersey

by Chris Chaos

Indian Cabin Road has all the attributes that legendary roads in New Jersey are made of, abandoned buildings, a church, "Pineys" with shotguns chasing you in pickup trucks, a murderer and a graveyard. This was enough to make us to want to visit this location to see what it is all about. Even armed with a GPS and maps this road was very difficult to find in the thick and twisted Pine Barrens.

Our 1st attempt put us in a school parking lot and it looked like we could cut through the woods on foot to get to the road, but this area was flooded out, so we had to leave, get back in the car and go all the way around several roads to get to the location. There are actually a few sections to this road and the one we attempted to get at was in a tiny residential neighborhood. The confusing part is there is a West Indian Cabin Road also. It was brought to my attention that this road used to be unpaved and sometime in recent years it has been paved. Looking for the West side we navigated through a community with very German sounding names such as Heidelberg, Goethe and Hamburg.

Idian cabin road graveMany of the stories that are connected to Indian Cabin Road sound like a repeat associated with other roads and locations like the stories of "Pineys" in pickup trucks chasing after you. But the story that got us interested was of the CRUKKER who supposedly lives along this road and is a rapist/child molester. Legend has it that late at night you can hear the cries of the children. It has also been stated that there is a tree made out of soda bottles and candy that he tries to lure children with.
When we finally did reach the road it was extremely dark outside and there was nowhere to park the car since we were on other people’s property. We did explore a bit and hung around to see if this mysterious man would show himself but we didn't see anyone except a person that lived in one of the local houses walking their dog and another person putting their trash out to the curb. In the future we do plan to go back in the daylight and see if any of the legends hold true.

Indian Cabin Road

Along this road there is an old abandoned boys camp, a house with a shrine and grave of a Ms. Shaler which reads:

“Sacred
To The Memory Of
Mrs. Sibbel Shaler
Consort of the late Timothy Shaler
Who departed this life
On the 2nd Day of April 1785
In the 34th year of her age
And whose mortal remains repose
Here together with those of three
Of her infant children“

HOLY HOLY HOLY: The Altar of Judgment and THE WITCHES' WELL

This week we will explore 2 mystical locations, both based in Mount Holly, NJ

HOLY HOLY HOLY: The Altar of Judgment and THE WITCHES' WELL
Mount Holly, New Jersey

2013-05-13_14-36-24_510Does Holy Holy Holy hold the Jersey Devil? The Witches Well: There was a legend that the Jersey Devil is sealed inside a stone altar on top of a mountain. This mountain is known as THE MOUNT in Mount Holly New Jersey. We went to this location several times, the 1st time we scouted it out and took many photographs, the 2nd time we went back and filmed some video.
Legend has it that the New Jersey Devil was chained up here and if you put your ear up to the metal door you can hear him thrashing around. Another legend was that this site was the capstone that went all the way to Hell.

Yet another legend goes that one of the 1st (suspected) witches in the area was thrown down this well and she survived the drop and clawed and screamed for help and cursed all those that threw her into the well. The Holy Holy Holy Altar of Judgment
Mt. Holly, NJ

A few hundred feet from the Witches Well and up a somewhat steep hill is the Altar that was used to judge the witches many years ago. The altar is a white (painted grey) concrete table (4 feet by 8 feet by 4 feet), It has the words “Holy Holy Holy” inscribed across it. In front of the slab are old wooden benches, set in a square. Much graffiti has been marked onto the altar and tales of modern day sex magic and animal sacrifices have taken place here. Right next to the altar is the gallow that they used to hang the witches with, but it has been long knocked down and only the stump remains.

On October 22, 1730 over 300 people had gathered to witness the trial of two people, a man and a woman, who had been accused of witchcraft. The charges included "making their neighbors sheep dance in an uncommon manner, and with causing hogs to speak, and sing Psalms, to the great terror and amazement of the King's good and peaceable subjects in this province." This took place 40 years after the famous witch trials in Salem, Mass.
We took video and photos of both locations, but nothing out of the ordinary occurred while we were there. We hope to go back at night and see if we obtain different results.

UPDATE: May 2013

We went back to this location in May 2013 and it really has changed. Someone redid the path leading from the street up to the HOLY HOLY HOLY ALTAR and it is now smooth and mulched and there are now park benches in front of the altar. The witch (that was buried outside of the cemetery) along with her grave and markers are still there. It seems that the community is tired of the kids going up there and “doing things they should not be”, so they are trying to make it a bit more touristy and to demystify the legends that surround this location. The area appears friendlier to the average person but is still mostly only known to the locals and those whom seek out and research these types of locations. In the Fall we plan to go back and gain more video and investigate a bit more to provide more updates. There are several trails spread out around The Mount that lead from The Mount itself, The Witches Well, The Holy Altar and the cemetery that we will also be investigating a bit deeper in depth.
