The Jersey Devil's Birth House

 The Jersey Devil's Birth House

On November 2nd, 2013 Kenneth Sooy Sr met up with us to provide  a detailed interview

concerning the Jersey Devil. He is the town historian and proved to be a wealth of

information concerning the legend and history of the Jersey Devil and the surrounding

area. Ken is a descendant of the Shrouds and his wife is a Leeds.

We met at Scott's Landing Road in Leed's Point/Galloway area and conducted the interview

at this location. Afterwards he showed us the location where the famous Shroud's House

once stood. The house burned to the ground in 1952 and only a small "overgrown clearing"

remains.

Afterwards he took us to a location in Smithville that is protected by development and we

walked to a very old cemetery and then over to the lake where the cement foundations of a

house still rests that burned in the 1950's. This location also has been claimed to be the

birthplace of the Jersey Devil..on both the Leed's and the Shroud's side of the tree.

The Legend of Boody Mill Road in Mantua, New Jersey

by Chris Chaos

The entrance to Boody Mill Road

It seems that just about every town in New Jersey has some sort of lore and urban legend associated with them. Mantua New Jersey is of no exception; off of Route 45 there is a little side road named Boody Mill Road and has a gruesome story attached to it.

The partially flooded road

The day we visited this location it was a sunny day with blue skies and huge billowing clouds overhead, the previous few days were rainy and over cast, so this was a welcomed change. Traveling down the road, we passed several nice homes on a very twisting and narrow road, yes, truly a one laner.

Back in 1989 there was some controversy started:
"......The road served as a dam for the lake. When the heavy rains poured into Gloucester County July 5, the old spillway pipe under the road cracked and gave in. The road's gravel, sand and blacktop caved in around the break, and the lake poured over it. Now, in place of the road is a gully 40 or 50 feet deep though which a stream rushes." (Excerpt from Philly.com August 16th 1989)

Read more of the details here:  Boody Mill Road gully

One of the remaining structures

A few hundred yards in we hit a dirt road that went on for several hundred more feet, and we started encountering deep mud puddles and didn't want to get the car stuck so we got out and continued on foot. After a short hike we found an opening on the side of the road and entered. Several bags of trash and hundreds of beer cans greeted us....along with several shelter shacks and shanties..looked more like a homeless hang out or a teenager party spot. The legendary house in the stories was gone, the trailer also. Not much here was left other than what looked like a party spot for wayward teens. One of the eeriest thing about this place was the lonely baby car seat left behind...

The lone baby car seat, one wonders how it found it's way here

THE HISTORY/LEGEND:
Back in 1992, a guy and his wife got into an argument which resulted in her leaving him and his kids behind. He reportedly went insane over this new arrangement, so one night while his kids were sleeping, he torched the house with them inside of it, killing them all, and then went out back, sat in his truck, and shot himself in the head. Ever since this incident, the torched house supposedly remained haunted. Legend has it,  everything in the house was burnt to a crisp except for a table with a bible sitting on top of it.

Narrow dirt section of the road

The bible is a little blackened, but in no way burnt up as you would expect in a fire, and still is legible. Across from the charred house is an open field, and if you park your car on that field at night and face it towards the house, you will see things. Supposedly if you are quiet, you can hear the sound of little kids playing out in that field, but why would young kids be playing outside past midnight? Sometimes you will hear something tapping on your car, and other times you might get a quick glimpse of somebody's face in your rear view mirror.

A video concerning Boody Mill Road

The remaining structure

Of courses as stated above, most of the components of this story no longer exist so we did not experience anything told in the tales. Have you been to this location? Have you any stories to tell concerning this legend?

Google Map, red X marks the location

Since we released this story a few years back many people contacted us asking us to retract the story since they live on the street and are tired of the endless sightseers that trespass on the property and are not respectful to the residents of the street. We ask that whenever you venture anywhere to please respect the privacy of the people that may live in the area. Take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints.

Here, The Cursed Website, we have more photos concerning Boody Mill Road along with other locations filled with Legend, Lore and History.

The Jersey Devil's Skull?

by Chris Chaos

After much research and consulting our various friends who are biologists, scientists and cryptozoologists, we have determined what the strange bone is that the man (Jack) in the documentary, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL", thought was the Jersey Devil's skull.

While filming the documentary "The Search for the Jersey Devil" we stumbled across a fruit stand on the side of the road that had a wonderful sign stating that for $1 you could see the Jersey Devil's skull. So we knocked on the door of the house connected to the stand and a woman answered stating that we would have to come back a little later since her husband was not there. We drove to the local bar and passed the time drinking beer and eating wings.

At the pre-agreed upon time we drove back to the farm stand and met with Farmer Jack to discuss what he had in his possession. He walked us to the back cabinet located in the fruit stand and pulled out several bones and a little card from Batsto NJ with a picture of the Jersey Devil on the front of it. He laid the bones out on the table and we started to film in amazement. Jack stated that about 2 years prior family members found the bones spread out on the corner of the property and everybody immediately assumed that it was the bones and skull of NJ's most famous resident. He also stated that there were many more bones present, but over the years they disappeared. Many people have come to this stand with the hopes of seeing the Jersey Devil's skull and Jack turned down the offer to allow the skull to appear in a museum.

Admittedly when he pulled the bones out and placed them on the table, the larger one did bear a resemblance to a skull. But after examining them for a few minutes I noticed on the underside of the main bone it appeared to be a spine and did not look like any other type of skull that I have seen in the past. At the time it was approx 2003 and I had little research conducted into the biology and make up of the Jersey Devil. But all in all I did not feel that this particular bone was a skull, let alone the skull of the Jersey Devil.

Over the years I looked up and consulted with people that possessed more knowledge concerning biology and the internal structures of animals. After a few talks it was determined that the bone in question was the Synsacrum of a bird. Of course various birds are native to New Jersey, but it was proof positive that it was NOT a skull nor had anything to do with the Jersey Devil.

Below is from the Wiki page for synsacrum (SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synsacrum)

"The synsacrum is a skeletal structure of birds and dinosaurs, in which the sacrum is extended by incorporation of additional fused or partially fused caudal or lumbar vertebrae. The innominate bones are fused with the synsacrum to a greater or lesser extent, according to species, forming an avian pelvis. This forms a more extensive rigid structure than the pelvis of a mammal, fulfilling requirements for flight, locomotion and respiration.

Posterior to the synsacrum there are a few free caudal vertebrae, the last of which is the pygostyle to which the long, stiff tail feathers are attached. The central section of the synsacrum is swollen to accommodate the glycogen body, an organ whose function is as yet unclear but which may be associated with balance.

In terms of external morphology, the synsacrum corresponds to the rump."

Authored by Mr Chris Chaos

“There will always be Demons, for even where none exist we'll find a way to make them. ”

This edition of the book goes into more depth concerning the science, biology and theory as to what the Jersey Devil is. It resists the rehashing and retelling of the same old stories that are repeated in previous publications.

What lurks in the Jersey Pine Barrens? Since 1735 people have been telling tales of some sort of beast that inhabits these woods. Is it a biological creature, a deformed child, the devil Himself, fodder for tourism or just the results of political slander. We go in depth to explore New Jersey's most famous resident.

The Bunny Man

by Chris Chaos

Recently this photo began circulating around the internet and immediately raised speculation on what it could be. Many state that it was an old photo of The Bunny Man kidnapping a girl and pulling her into his lair. But supposedly it was found in 1982 in a dumpster in Georgia.

THE LEGEND OF THE BUNNY MAN
Comprised of many different versions, the story of The Bunny Man is an urban legend based out of Fairfax County Virginia from 1970. The legend goes that a man will don a bunny suit and attack people with an axe. The Bunny Man supposedly stalks and hunts on Bunny Man Bridge... "Bunny Man Bridge's" real name is Colchester Overpass which is located near Clifton.

Brian Conley, the Fairfax County Public Library Historian-Archivist, has researched the legend of the Bunny man and he discovered two separate incidents, occurring one week a part in 1970, where a man in a bunny costume threatened people. These incidents occurred in Burke, Virginia. October 19th, 1970 an incident was reported by an Air Force Cadet by the name of Bob Bennett. His fiancee and himself were visiting family members in Burke and about midnight they parked their car on Guinea Road. While talking they saw something moving out the back window. A few seconds later the window on the passenger side was smashed in and a mysterious figure, appearing in all white was standing there. As Bob tried to speed off, a man yelled at them: "You're on private property and I have your tag number." As they drove away Bob's fiancee noticed a hatchet on the floor, this is what was  thrown through the window.

Bob drove to the police station so that he could report the incident and gave the description of a man in a bunny suit with long rabbit ears. His fiancee reported a description more along the lines of a man in a Klan suit with the pointy hood. The hatchet was returned to the couple once the report was filed.

On October 29th, 1970 a second incident was reported by a security guard named Paul Phillips. Paul saw  a man standing in front of a house in a construction site and decided to investigate. Paul stated that the man was wearing a bunny suit that was grey, black and white and he appeared to be in his 20's, approx 5 foot 8 inches and 175 pounds. As Paul approached the man in the bunny suit started to swing an axe into a porch and started yelling: "All you people trespass around here. If you don't get out of here, I'm going to bust you on the head."

Short video concerning The Bunny Man by Alana G.

The local police department launched an investigation but there were no leads or additional information so the cases were closed. But...after the two above mentioned incidents over 50 people claimed to have spot The Bunny Man and a few newspapers ran articles on this wascally wabbit:

"Man in Bunny Suit Sought in Fairfax" (October 22, 1970)
"The 'Rabbit' Reappears" (October 31, 1970)
"Bunny Man Seen" (November 4, 1970)
"Bunny Reports Are Multiplying" (November 6, 1970)
In 1973, University of Maryland a student named Patricia Johnson submitted a research paper that chronicled precisely 54 variations of these events.

As stated previously there were several other versions to this legend. One even named a suspect Douglas J. Grifon (who was placed in prison for killing his family on Easter Sunday) as the Bunny Man. Legend has it that back in 1904 inmates were being transferred from a shutdown prison asylum to a new building and several escaped during a crash. All prisoners were recovered except for Mr. Grifon. After the crash many locals claimed to have found hundreds of skinned, half-eaten rabbit corpses hanging in the trees. While searching the area, the police found the body of a Marcus Wallster hanging under Bunny Man Bridge.

Supposedly the police located Douglas but as they were trying to arrest him at the overpass, he gets hit by a train. Legend still goes that many years after the Bunny Man's death and around Halloween, you can find dead rabbit bodies hanging from the overpass. Also a man in a bunny suit is seen from time to time.

Brian Conley states that this story is just that due to the fact that there has never been an insane asylum in Fairfax County and that Lorton Prison didn't come into existence until 1910. He also stated that during his research he found that according to court records there never was a Douglas Grifon or a Marcus Wallster.

Due to the popularity of The Bunny Man legend, Colchester Overpass is a popular tourist destination, especially around Halloween, for people involved in the paranormal, explorers and those that like urban legends. The police discourage this due to the fact it is dangerous to wander around on an active intersection of trains and cars.

Now back to the original photo that was mentioned at the beginning of this article....this was simply a screenshot from a 2011 film entitled "Bunny Man".

The Atco Ghost

By Chris Chaos

Atco New Jersey.  There has been a story circulating in the area for decades, a ghost story, a fable, legend...but is it based in truth? Atco is named after the Atlantic Transport Company. Or was it named from an old Indian word for "Land of Many Deer"?

The Atco Ghost video (Axis Video)

Legend has it that many years ago, on Christmas night, a young boy was chasing his basketball into the street and was hit by a speeding car, whose driver may have been drunk, killing him instantly. The driver decided to run for fear of what he just did, he had to perform a U-Turn since this road is a dead end. The person in the car had to pass the body of the child that he just hit. Hence why it is part of the legend that you must drive to the gate of the sewer plant and then turn around.

[1]

Alternative stories state that a truck leaving the factory at the end of the road hit the child after he ran into the street chasing his ball he just received on Christmas.

On Burnt Mill Road in Atco they say that under VERY specific circumstances, you can see the ghost of this boy playing in the street. The legend states that if you go to Burnt Mill Road in Atco NJ at midnight and park three telephone poles away from the opening in the fence of the sewer plant (where a crack splits the road from one side of the road to the other) and face the area in front of the house (approx the 500/600 "block") and honk your horn 3 times, blink your headlights 3 times and wait....and IF the conditions are right, you may just see a little ghostly boy run into the road chasing the ball in slow motion. Some say that if you turn off your car and walk about 20 feet away you might see the boy appear and look into the car to see if it was the one that killed him. There supposedly have been many eyewitness accounts attesting to this over the years, but many of the people telling the story state that they have not seen anything but...their cousin, brother, uncle, or whoever has seen the ghost of this boy.

[2]

Burnt Mill Road comes off of the Old White Horse Pike and leads to a sewer plant and then promptly fades into a dirt road (that used to be traveled by horse and wagon) and now only an ATV could traverse, finally ending into Fleming Pike near Sandy Causeway. There are many interesting sounding names in the Pine Barrens, here we have Swamp Road Wild Cat Branch and the Sleeper Branch. If you follow the various soft sanded roads you could find yourself on Rt 206, along the Mullica River or on your way to Batsto.

Google map of Burnt Mill Road, star marks location of The Atco Ghost

Atco, in the middle of the Pine Barrens...Atco Raceway [3]..people like to drive fast. Burnt Mill Road is a long straight road that cars can build speed and maybe inspired by any of the race movies of the time, people were testing their mettle along this road and set the process into motion to create the legend of the Atco Ghost.

Despite all that is contained within the legend of the Atco Ghost, there was never any record of a little boy being hit by a car (or truck) on Burnt Mill Road, and killed.

"The only ghost around here is Holy!" from the sign in front of the Atco Assembly of God [4]

For my personal experience with the Atco Ghost...in the late 90's a friend of mine familiar with the story and with the area took me to Atco one late night so we could try and experience the legend ourselves. We followed the rules and waited...and waited...and waited...and waited....but nothing happened.

"On Friday the 13th 2006 I went in search of The Atco Ghost on Burnt Mill Rd in Atco NJ. I didnt realize I had caught it on film until I reviewed the tape. The ghost is a little boy that was hit by a car when he was crossing the street chasing after a ball."

In an interesting sidenote..when I was doing research for The Atco Ghost I was using Google Maps to track down the exact location of where you are supposed to perform the tasks to get the little ghost boy to appear....can you guess what the address is for the exact locations? ha

In the coming weeks we plan on going back and investigating further.

The Jersey Devil Story

by Chris Chaos

It was a cold and stormy night in the year 1735 and Mother Leeds was in the throes of labor ready to deliver her 13th Child. Fed up with the frustration of her previous children she was tired and worn out and cursed this child, "I hope this one is the devil!!!!". A few minutes later the child was born, after a bit the child transformed with the gnashing of teeth, sprouting of wings and the growing of claws. The Devil child jumped out of Mother Leeds arms, screeched loudly and then flew up the chimney out into the night.

Legend has it that Mother Leeds was a witch (although factual basis dictates otherwise) and the father was the Devil Himself. This could be political doublespeak in an attempt to assassinate the character of your rivals. The neighbors were weary of the Leed's family and the love affair with the Jersey Devil will prove this over the centuries. But is the legend of the Jersey Devil just a cautionary tale told to keep the children in line? Is it just an urban formulated to draw in tourists and to keep us entertained while gathered around the campfire?

Mrs. Leeds had a baby that was so deformed, it tore her open when it was born. The deformed baby was kept out of sight by the family, because it was so hideous. The birth was supposedly the result of Mrs. Leed's promiscuous lifestyle and the townspeople all shunned her. There are many accounts throughout history of the "feral child", this could be a child born with some sort of birth defect and the parent could not or would not deal with the situation for one of many reasons. Basically the deformed or "retarded" child would be brought to an isolated area and left on its one to fend for itself, and the Pine Barrens is the perfect isolated location. A decent horror film that depicts how children left to the wilderness to fend for themselves is a film called MAMA (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2023587/)

It is very easy to see how a deformed child born in this era could be confused with some sort of monster, or be considered the child of the devil. To an overly religious or an uneducated public, this phenomenon could be construed as being something Satanic or the product of witchcraft to the fearful witnesses. The scared public could have been the source of the Jersey Devil legends, they could have seen a deformed child and the tales could have manifested themselves into the legends that we all know of today.

The Jersey Devil was born out of fact, fate, myth, fear, resentment and a whole lot of mystery. There were components of political slander, fear of deformed/cognitively challenged offspring, Hammerhead Bats, herons, cranes, deer, tall tales and exaggerations, fear of the unknown and the gossip of the townsfolk. A couple hundred years later and the documentary, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL" (www.facebook.com/TheSearchForTheJerseyDevil) is sorting through the stories and reports to make sense of it all.

A site that provides some photographic examples of birth defects would be: http://pixgood.com/chernobyl-animal-birth-defects.html

Cursed Revisited is the 2nd in the series featuring various locations on the east coast in an attempt to preserve and investigate the paranormal, the unexplained, local lore and uphold the preservation of history, culture and architectural landmarks. This book is a result of years of research, documenting and exploring. Using a combination of the internet to find as much information that we could concerning the locations/topics, neighbors of the locations, eyewitness interviews, news reports, logic, skepticism and commonsense, we present to you, the legends, the lore, the facts and the science that is associated with all the locations that we have investigated and researched.

About the author:

As the owner of Axis Video/Pine Barren Films he has produced and has been involved with some ground breaking projects in the world of music and documentaries on the east coast. Gradually he switched his focus from making films to authoring books on various hot button topics.

In the vein of paranormal and the preservation of history and lore he has created the series "Cursed: An Explanation of the Unknown" and the documentary "The Search for the Jersey Devil" along with its companion book of the same title.

For his contribution to music he produced countless music videos for many international, national and even local bands. Some can be viewed on his "Dynasty of Darkness" compilations.

Concerning his horror writings many wondered what inspired him to pen the stories that he did and here is an excerpt of what he had to say: "Horror is all around us, just turn on the news or look out your window. The demons and monsters are inside of your fellow man. From the meth mom that sells her infant to a film producer of stomping videos in exchange for drugs to the parent that kills her child so they can have more time to play Farmville. Inspiration comes from those around you, turn the bad, the horrible into something good." "When I was a child I would borrow my father's movies..he thought I was watching child friendly movies but I was taking his Faces of Death video tapes and going into my room to take it all in."

The Search for the Jersey Devil: A Basic Overview

by Chris Chaos

(This is an older article from 2014)

The Jersey Devil originally referred to as The Leeds Devil, a cryptid that is believed to inhabit the Pinelands in New Jersey, has been haunting the surrounding areas since about 1735. Over these years, the creature has been reportedly witnesses by more than 2,000 individuals.

The Jersey Devil has terrorized and amused N.J. towns throughout this time and has even caused schools to close and people to fear venturing outside their own homes. Is good ole' J.D. a creation of Piney folklore, a left over dinosaur, an undiscovered species, a hybrid, a ghost or The 13th Child?

The legendary creature of Southern New Jersey is described as a biped that flies and has cloven hooves. There are several description of the Jersey Devil, the most popular one is that it is a kangaroo-like creature that has a horse’s face, a dog’s head, leathery wings (resembling that of a bat), small arms and clawed hands, horns, a forked tail and cloven hooves. It reportedly moves fast so as to keep away from human contact and emits “blood-curdling scream.”

There are several different versions of the story of how the Jersey Devil has become to exist. The earliest dates back to the Lenape tribe where they called the Pine Barrens "Popuessing", which translates to "Place of the Dragon". Later the Swedes referred to this area as "Drake Kill". Drake meaning dragon and Kill referring to a channel of a river.

The most popular and widely accepted origin story is of Mother Leeds having 12 kids and cursing her 13th born, who was to become the Jersey Devil. On a dark stormy night Mrs Leeds gave birth to her seemingly normal baby but shortly afterwards it grew wings, hooves, a horses head and a forked tail. It Jersey devil footscreamed, killed the midwife and then flew up the chimney and into the Pine Barrens where it currently lives. Supposedly in 1740 a member of the religious community exorcised the Jersey Devil for 100 years. There were not any reported sightings of JD until 1890.

Based on real history Deborah Leeds and Japhet Leeds (of Leeds Point, NJ) were married and records indicate they did have 12 children. While visiting Hanover Mill Works to inspect the forging of cannonballs Commodore Stephen Decatur claims he sighted the Jersey Devil and fired a cannonball at the winged creature, but it had no effect on it.
In 1820 Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonaparte also claimed to see the Jersey Devil while at his Bordentown home.

From January 16th to the 23rd in 1909 was the busiest period for sightings of the Jersey Devil. Newspapers were bustling with headlines stating encounters with the Jersey Devil. Widespread panic ensued when the Jersey Devil supposedly attacked a trolley car in Camden and Haddonfield, a social club and unexplained footprints were found in the snow. January seems to be the most likely month to spot the Jersey Devil.

The Philadelphia Zoo offered a reward of $10,000 to whomever could capture the Jersey Devil. News coverage created pandemonium and schools were closed and factories shutdown.
An unidentified animal was shot and killed in December 1925 as it tried to kill chickens. The man from Greenwich showed the body to all that came to see it but no one could determine what the animal was.
On July 27th 1937 in Downingtown PA residents saw an animal with red eyes that they could not identified.
Back in 1960 in Mays Landing tracks were found and noises were heard and were assumed to be those of the Jersey Devil. Also merchants in the Camden area offered up $10,000 to anyone that could bring them the Jersey Devil.

It has been said that when the Jersey Devil is spotted usually it is followed by some sort of bad historic occurrence such as war or ships sinking.

Many skeptics that do not believe in the Jersey Devil believe it is simply just the product of an over active imagination or just a story to scare the children. Others feel that the legend may have been created for political gains. The earliest recollections and referrals to the Jersey Devil called it The Leeds Devil and may have been to discredit a Daniel Leeds who was a local politician.

Out of all the cryptoid the Jersey Devil has the least amount of photos, videos and physical evidence collected against him. Some common explanations of what the Jersey Devil might be are: ghost, inbred, birth defect, mentally disabled, Sand Hill Crane, Hammerhead Bat, Dinosaur (specifically a dimorphodon), undiscovered species and a figment of an overactive imagination.
