The Jersey Devil: The Red Kangaroo Theory

Phantom Kangaroo

In January 1909 the Jersey Devil was revived by a hoax and displayed in a private museum (9th and Arch Museum) in Philadelphia, the creature was actually a kangaroo outfitted with fake wings affixed by a harness and painted with green stripes. To make it leap at spectators when the curtain was drawn, a boy hidden at the rear of the cage prodded the unfortunate animal with a stick and a nail attached to it. The showman's name was Jacob Hope (or Norman Jefferies RIP May 25, 1933) and he claimed JD was an Australian Vampire and offered a reward for its capture.

In the 1800's and early 1900's many residents of New Jersey did keep exotic animals as pets and traveling circuses were the norm. So a kangaroo being either kept as a pet (or at a circus) could have possibly escaped and was spotted in the Pine Barrens mistaken for the Jersey Devil.  I think you could look at a kangaroo in the dark woods and see a deer due to the very similar facial structure and body type. In modern times, it is "illegal" to have a kangaroo in the state of NJ but you can obtain an exotic pet license and a permit for the kangaroo.

The Jersey Devil: Hammerhead Bat Theory

If you look at pictures for the hammerhead bat that is native to Africa, you will see that its face does resemble traditional depictions of the Jersey Devil. The sizes are a bit off given that some people stated that the Jersey Devil was between 6-8 feet tall and the bat has a wing span of 27-38 inches and a total length of 7.7-11.2 inches, weighing 8-15.9 ounces and the females are slightly smaller.

One theory could be that someone in the area was keeping a Hammerhead bat as a pet and it escaped. But once again, the sizes between the Hammerhead Bat and the Jersey Devil are way off. The comparison between the two animals is not to far off since throughout time many residents of New Jersey have kept exotic animals as pets. There also have been quite a few zoos, circuses and what not associated with the area.

Many skeptics and those people looking for a rational explanation as to what people have been seeing for several hundreds years in the New Jersey Pine Barrens have searched desperately for an answer. One of the most common and logical given answers has been the Sandhill Crane.

The Jersey Devil's Birth House

 The Jersey Devil's Birth House

On November 2nd, 2013 Kenneth Sooy Sr met up with us to provide  a detailed interview

concerning the Jersey Devil. He is the town historian and proved to be a wealth of

information concerning the legend and history of the Jersey Devil and the surrounding

area. Ken is a descendant of the Shrouds and his wife is a Leeds.

We met at Scott's Landing Road in Leed's Point/Galloway area and conducted the interview

at this location. Afterwards he showed us the location where the famous Shroud's House

once stood. The house burned to the ground in 1952 and only a small "overgrown clearing"

remains.

Afterwards he took us to a location in Smithville that is protected by development and we

walked to a very old cemetery and then over to the lake where the cement foundations of a

house still rests that burned in the 1950's. This location also has been claimed to be the

birthplace of the Jersey Devil..on both the Leed's and the Shroud's side of the tree.

As far as the face of the Hammerhead Bat it appears to be a better explanation of what people of the Pine Barrens have been seeing as opposed to the Sandhill Crane. But the one up that the Crane has over the bat is that the Crane is native to New Jersey and the bat is native to Africa. The Sandhill Crane is a herbivore, but since the Jersey Devil has been accused of stealing and attacking livestock and chickens he is thought of as a carnivore. Also the Crane stands about 40-48 inches (3-4 feet) tall and the Jersey Devil is about 72-96 inches (6-8 feet). It is noted that the crane has a loud screech and legend has it, that the Jersey Devil does too. Many skeptics and those people looking for a rational explanation as to what people have been seeing for several hundreds years in the New Jersey Pine Barrens have searched desperately for an answer. The Unknown "Hand Print" on the Back of the Car Incident (Martha's Furnace)

by Chris Chaos

Back on February 10th, 2010 we ventured off to find Martha's Furnace in Chatsworth, New Jersey. It was late at night and very dark, we did not have a jeep but we did have a car that was ill equipped for the terrain that we were to venture down.

The mysterious handprint on the trunk

Across the street from the Historic Harrisville Ghost Town Ruins,we started down Martha Road, the road is simply a dirt road but eventually graduates to a loose sand and grass path that should be traversed either by foot or by Jeep.

Was There a Satanic Murder at Batsto NJ?

by Chris Chaos

The bloody shorts, shirt, shoes, Barbie doll and note

The date was October 18th 2015, a brisk chilly Fall day with a temperature of about 55 degrees. Something heinous took place during the overnight hours at this historic location. The last time something this horrific occurred here was back in 1993. (1)

We were alerted to a possible murder of a baby in Batsto NJ, a hiker found a baby's white shirt (size 0-3 months), pants and booties covered in blood along with a letter addressed to "My Lord" claiming the child as a "sacrifice". A Barbie doll was found alongside the bloody clothing but no human body was found.

We were initially contacted because some people (wrongfully) speculated that this may have been Jersey Devil connected. But obviously JD would not have had access to a printer to leave behind the letter, nor has he been known to kill little infants.

Last Trip of 2015: Blue Hole, Suicide Bridge, Marl Pit, Airplane Graveyard, Ancora etc

 by Chris Chaos

The last day of 2015 was a nice weathered day so we took a small scaled road trip to visit the following locations:

THE BLUE HOLE:

We have been at this location several times in preparation for our documentary and books concerning the Jersey Devil. The Blue Hole is oddly well known and also a local secret, it was a popular watering hole that the locals used to swim at in the 1930's and 40's. Then in the 50's or 60's (depending on who is telling the story) a storm washed out the bridge that crossed over the Egg Harbor River.

The Jersey Devil Movies and Television Shows

by Chris Chaos

Over the years there have been quite a few movies and television shows that depicted the Jersey Devil, but the general consensus is that they fall really flat and are a disappointment to the legend that the Jersey Devil has provided. Below are a few of the most popular movies/shows along with a link to their respective IMDB page so that you can locate production data and a link to a trailer or scene if it is available. Obviously this is not a full list of Jersey Devil related movies, if you know of a movie that should be in this list, feel free to contact us.

The Search for the Jersey Devil: Revisited
Authored by Mr Chris Chaos

“There will always be Demons, for even where none exist we'll find a way to make them. ”

This edition of the book goes into more depth concerning the science, biology and theory as to what the Jersey Devil is. It resists the rehashing and retelling of the same old stories that are repeated in previous publications.

What lurks in the Jersey Pine Barrens? Since 1735 people have been telling tales of some sort of beast that inhabits these woods. Is it a biological creature, a deformed child, the devil Himself, fodder for tourism or just the results of political slander. We go in depth to explore New Jersey's most famous resident.

Was the Jersey Devil Finally Videotaped/Photographed?

by Chris Chaos

Out of all the cryptids from around the world, the Jersey Devil is the one with the least amount of video, photographs and physical evidence concerning him.

Anytime news hits involving the Jersey Devil my inbox and notifications go off like crazy, especially this time of year when the activity increases due to the proximity to Halloween. I have spent the last few years, from November of 2002 till now, researching, exploring and compiling information concerning the Jersey Devil and the results will be released on October 31st, 2015 in a book medium, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL: Revisited" .

Today I received messages from multiple sources making me aware of the following two new updates to the Jersey Devil legend. One was from NJ.com and the other was from Weird NJ.

Cover of the book, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL: Revisited"

On NJ.com's website [1], October 12th, 2015 it was reported that Dave Black of Little Egg Harbor spotted what he thought was the Jersey Devil. he snapped a few pictures but only one came out. Here is an excerpt from the story from NJ.com by Kelly Roncace:

".......Dave Black of Little Egg Harbor Township was driving home from his security guard job in Atlantic City when he saw what he thought was a llama running in and out of the trees lining the road.

"I was just driving past the golf course in Galloway on Route 9 and had to shake my head a few times when I thought I saw a llama," he wrote in his email.

What happened next is the bizarre part.

"If that wasn't enough, then it spread out leathery wings and flew off over the golf course."

Um...what?!

Black said he grabbed his cell phone and snapped off a few photos, but only one came out.

The creature quickly disappeared, he said, and left Black wondering.

"Either my mind is playing tricks on me or I just saw the Jersey Devil," he wrote.

After his encounter, Black said he stared at the photo for an hour trying to come up with an explanation for the image he had captured, before deciding to share it with NJ.com and its readers.

"Thought I'd send it in for you to share," he wrote. "I'm not looking for anything in return, just thought someone else could maybe explain this in a more rational way."

Before I could write about his experience and print the photo, I had to be sure he was sincere.

Dave Black's photo of what he claims to be of the Jersey Devil

"Yes, I swear it's not Photoshopped or a staged thing," Black responded when I asked if he was willing to let me use his name and state that the photo he sent was not manipulated in any way. "People have said it's fake, but it's not. I'm honestly just looking for an explanation for what I saw."

Being a paranormal investigator, I'm very skeptical and need proof before I believe in anything that could be considered paranormal.

The photo, if it truly has not been messed with or wasn't set up, is quite...interesting.

You can clearly see wings on the creatures back and horns on its head. Its feet are cloven and the fur is dark brown.

And it's obviously off the ground.

I don't see any wires or string holding it up like a piñata.

However, what is it?

"The mind plays tricks on you," Black admitted. "A friend suggested that maybe it was an animal running and an owl grabbed it, the photo being a combination of them. That's still not my first instinct, but I don't know how to explain it otherwise."

His final statement on the incident was simply, "I think I saw a large, flying mammal about the size of a deer."

Weird NJ received a letter from one of their readers named Emily Martin, the following is an excerpt from the letter [2]:

“I realize this sounds crazy but I saw a red animal with a long neck and horns. I swear on my mother’s grave, this is not a joke. I pulled over to take a video and as I started filming it got on its hind legs and flew away. I am an middle school teacher but moonlight tutoring algebra for high school students. Was driving home from an appointment on Old Port Republic Rd in Leeds Point when I took this video. So excited, had to share with someone. I searched online and a few others have similar stories. Channel 12 posted a photo online of it.”

Here is Emily's VIDEO:

We are currently analyzing the above stories, photo and video and will have our opinion formed after a proper study has been taken.

Brooksbrae Brick Factory and Mount Misery

by Chris Chaos

It was a nice cool, windy day and after servicing a client we decided to go on a drive to find the abandoned Brooksbrae Brick Factory location. The trip was unplanned so we uncharacteristically headed out unprepared. Normally we come equipped with ample food, drinks, battery power, digital and video camera to properly document our findings. Not to mention usually we properly and extensively research a location so that we can understand it before our arrival. From where we were our way point was 9.8 miles away (Mount Misery). We have been at the MT Misery locations a few times but that was a few years ago, so we decided to go back.

While venturing down Four Mile Road we saw several flashing lights and determined as we approached that they were police and they have the road blocked off. Several cars were pulled off to the side of the road and we assumed either an accident, a tree fell or possible a Pine Barrens fire.

AN ACCIDENT

Apparently a truck carrying what looked like pallets flipped over and a car plowed into them landing on top..also somehow there was an additional truck that was flipped on the side of the road. The police requested that pictures not be taken anymore due to the fact it was a possible crime scene.

The Blue Hole, Winslow Township, New Jersey

by Chris Chaos

Within this body of water, a cold hand may reach up to greet you. Is it that of the Jersey Devil?

Since at least the 1930's the Jersey Devil has been linked to the Blue Hole. It is rumored to be his favorite watering hole and will pull under swimmers to their icy deaths. Bernard Anlage from Kramer Hill Camden provided Mr. Henry Charlton Beck with a wealth of knowledge concerning the Blue Hole located in Winslow Township, NJ. Located near Inskips Road and Piney Hollow Road it was a fearful place where the adults, including the hermit Joe Dixon, always warned their children to stay away from due to the supposed Devil that called this place home. Dave Dixon, Joe's brother fondly recalled that many of his boyhood friends had to be retrieved and revived after being pulled from the Blue Hole. This occurred after they, "..dared the hoodoo and sought to swim across."

Inskip Brick was the name of the man who ran the sawmill along the Blue Hole. Dave went on to state, "My father and others warned me and the boys I went around with not to hang around the bottomless pit. They used to say things about cramps but they meant more than that. It was as if there was something about that pool that had them scared, something they did not want to understand, something that gave them the shakes.

Dave went on to relate a tale that a man by the name of John Inskips Brown laughed at the people's warnings and swam out to the middle of the Blue Hole. He then let out a shout and went under the icy water for the last time, the locals fished John out and pulled him to the shore. John stated that the devil reached up and got him from deep in the pool.

Charles Downs from Williamstown stated, "The legends clinging to the hole have been handed down for years. Some Boy Scouts came here a few years ago and cleaned it out-this bridge is new as there are concrete pipes under the sluice. They managed to give the pool a free outlet for a time but now, as you can see, the flow is sluggish and the Blue Hole as sinister as ever."

Bernard Anlage went on to say, "..there used to be a big pike that hung around down there on the other side for many years. He would never even look at the bait on my hooks when I used to fish here. They tell me he got caught two years ago" (Beck, 1937).
(Note that the average life span of a Pike is 7 years)

The remains of the bridge
Located within the Pine Barrens of Winslow Township, New Jersey the Blue Hole (also referred to as The Devil's Puddle) is a mysterious body of water that remains cold (averages 50-58 degrees even in the summer months) no matter what time of the year and possibly houses the Jersey Devil himself. The blue water itself is very odd since most of the surrounding lakes are brown in color due to the bog iron and cedar water. The Blue Hole is possibly fed by groundwater as opposed to the surrounding streams.
Blue Hole Video

The Blue Hole, alleged to be bottomless, is approx 70 feet across, almost perfectly round, there are no signs of life within the lake and it is always cold to the touch. Back in the 1930's it was a popular watering hole for the locals and there was a wooden bridge over the Great Egg Harbor River that was washed away in the 1940's or 1960's (depending on who is telling the story) by a storm.

True danger does lurk among the warnings of the Jersey Devil. The hole has become abandoned to the locals due to the fears that it is bottomless, the currents or the Jersey Devil will pull you down to your death. But there are several similar holes in the area and is plagued by quicksand due to the high water table levels in the area. Rumored to be bottomless, others state that the bottom is made up of "sugar sand" and has claimed many victims. In its isolation, when you stand near the hole, it is eerily quiet and no sounds can be heard at all. Except for BLAST!! shots fired from the nearby shooting range. The surface of this watery hole is insanely still.

Some say that the hole is bottomless, others claim they have attempted to measure its depth only to fail. Legend states that The Devil Himself uses this hole as his personal portal to Hell. Still others claim that there is an unusual amount of Jersey Devil sightings in this area.

The Great Egg Harbor River where the bridge washed away

Locals fear swimming here and tell the tales of bodies being pulled out of the hole with scratches on their backs and legs after something pulled them down to their watery grave. Legends and tales are in no short supply and state that whirlpools form and swimmers cannot escape its pull. One man was supposedly pulled from his icy grave with scratches on his legs and black empty holes where his eyes once were. Of course tales of occult activity has also been attached to the location.

There are several fire pits around the area, but many claim them to be of Satanic origin

My personal opinion is that the Blue Hole is a pingo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pingo), left over from the Ice Age. This would explain the cold water along with why the color is clear as opposed to the murky cedar water of surrounding bodies of water in the area.

New Jersey is full of strange surprises and the Blue Hole is no exception.

The Significance of the Crescent holed Outhouse and the Jersey Devil

by Chris Chaos

The outhouse, a common staple in movies depicting the deep south and the stereotypical hillbilly. So what does an outhouse have to do with the Jersey Devil and New Jersey?

There are many explanation as to why an outhouse has a moon cut out in the door. First let's go with logic, you know what takes place inside an outhouse and the modern indoor bathroom will either have a vent fan or a window for ventilation. Since the waste will sit in a dug out hole underneath the outhouse and will not get flushed away into a sewer system like modern houses with current plumbing, this little technique will allow some of the gases and smells escape.

The Jersey Devil Story

by Chris Chaos

It was a cold and stormy night in the year 1735 and Mother Leeds was in the throes of labor ready to deliver her 13th Child. Fed up with the frustration of her previous children she was tired and worn out and cursed this child, "I hope this one is the devil!!!!". A few minutes later the child was born, after a bit the child transformed with the gnashing of teeth, sprouting of wings and the growing of claws. The Devil child jumped out of Mother Leeds arms, screeched loudly and then flew up the chimney out into the night.

Legend has it that Mother Leeds was a witch (although factual basis dictates otherwise) and the father was the Devil Himself. This could be political doublespeak in an attempt to assassinate the character of your rivals. The neighbors were weary of the Leed's family and the love affair with the Jersey Devil will prove this over the centuries. But is the legend of the Jersey Devil just a cautionary tale told to keep the children in line? Is it just an urban formulated to draw in tourists and to keep us entertained while gathered around the campfire?

Mrs. Leeds had a baby that was so deformed, it tore her open when it was born. The deformed baby was kept out of sight by the family, because it was so hideous. The birth was supposedly the result of Mrs. Leed's promiscuous lifestyle and the townspeople all shunned her. There are many accounts throughout history of the "feral child", this could be a child born with some sort of birth defect and the parent could not or would not deal with the situation for one of many reasons. Basically the deformed or "retarded" child would be brought to an isolated area and left on its one to fend for itself, and the Pine Barrens is the perfect isolated location. A decent horror film that depicts how children left to the wilderness to fend for themselves is a film called MAMA (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2023587/)

It is very easy to see how a deformed child born in this era could be confused with some sort of monster, or be considered the child of the devil. To an overly religious or an uneducated public, this phenomenon could be construed as being something Satanic or the product of witchcraft to the fearful witnesses. The scared public could have been the source of the Jersey Devil legends, they could have seen a deformed child and the tales could have manifested themselves into the legends that we all know of today.

The Jersey Devil was born out of fact, fate, myth, fear, resentment and a whole lot of mystery. There were components of political slander, fear of deformed/cognitively challenged offspring, Hammerhead Bats, herons, cranes, deer, tall tales and exaggerations, fear of the unknown and the gossip of the townsfolk. A couple hundred years later and the documentary, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL" (www.facebook.com/TheSearchForTheJerseyDevil) is sorting through the stories and reports to make sense of it all.

A site that provides some photographic examples of birth defects would be: http://pixgood.com/chernobyl-animal-birth-defects.html

DEBORAH SMITH LEEDS: Did she give birth to the Jersey Devil?

by Chris Chaos

The facts:
Deborah Smith was born in 1685 in Burlington County, New Jersey and died as Deborah Leeds in 1748 in Atlantic County New Jersey. She was a Quaker and married Japhet Leeds giving birth to 12 of his children. Deborah was the daughter of Daniel Smith and Mary Murfin. There is much speculation and much of the details may have been lost to time. In those times it was an old practice to name the first son after the parents, which in her situation was not true. Deborah named her first son Robert, and her sixth son, Daniel, bore the name of her father. Japheth's father was also named Daniel. Her first child Mary was born 1704, and her last known child by Japheth, Hannah, was
born 1726.

Some information provided supports the idea that Deborah was not the daughter of Daniel Smith and Mary Murfin:
"Mary's (Murfin) Granddaughter Hannah Callender wrote a diary & listed her Grandparents' children & Deborah is not listed. Extracts from the diary of Hannah Callendar--Daniel & Mary Murfin Smith were her Grandparents. All info on dates (birth & death) taken from Daniel Smith's family Bible June 20, 1759 by Hannah Callender--
'The Diary of Hannah Callender Sansom--Sense & sensibility in the age of the American Revolution,' Edited by Susan E. Klepp & Karin Wulf."

Much research would need to be conducted to find a birth record , perhaps in old Quaker meeting records of Burlington County, New Jersey, we can't be sure. We do know that there were several Smiths who attended Quaker Meetings along with her husband's family.Checking census records for the area, Deborah and Japhet did have a confirmed 12 children. In the Leed's Point area she is the only person that fit the profile of Mother Leeds without embellishment. The time frame was right on also since most legends place the Jersey Devil's birth in 1735. Since her last (confirmed) born child was born in 1726, in 1735 Deborah would have been 50 years old. Back in the 1700's it would have been highly unlikely that a woman in her 50's would have had a successful birth due to the primitive medical care. This might lead us to speculate and explore the possibilities that the 13th child was born handicapped, mentally retarded or disfigured over a real life devil or beast.

There are also political/religious reasons for the legend of the Jersey Devil to appear. Deborah was a Quaker and possibly converted to Episcopalian after she married Japhet. He was also a Quaker but in 1688 had a falling out with his church and then converted to Episcopalian and was christened at St. Mary's of Burlington in 1703. This rift may explain why Deborah was accused of being a witch and how the word "devil" made it into the Leed's/Jersey Devil's name.

Originally the Jersey Devil was called the Leed's Devil, it was not until the 1900's the Jersey Devil name came around. Other names he was called were Hoodle-Doodle Bird, Wozzle Bug, flying hoof and winged dog.

Abstract of Japhet's will from 30 NJA1st 295-296:
1736, Feb. 5. Leeds, Japhet, of Great Egg Harbor, Gloucester Co., yeoman; will of. Wife, Deborah. Sons-Robert, land bought of Benjamin Jennings near a brook, formerly called Wigwam Creek, southeast to Holly Swamp brook; John, land, 200 acres, bought of his uncle Felix Leeds, by the south branch of Landing Creek; Japhet, the plantation I live on by the Bay northwest to Maple Swamp; Nehemiah, land adjoining Jeremiah Addams; James (youngest son), land bought of Benjamin Jennings, adjoining his brother Robert's; and Daniel, not 14.
